Since May 2020, researchers have documented nearly 700 incidents of killer whales ramming into boats near the Iberian Peninsula, with 6 cases of the Orcas actually sinking the boat completely. In 2020, only 52 interactions were recorded, with that number rising to 207 in 2022. With each passing year there are more boat and Orca interactions and with more anthropomorphizing comes more violence towards the endangered 40 Orcas that call the Strait their home. On various facebook groups and apps people are telling others to ‘take up arms’ against these animals.
Together with an incredible crew of Marine Biologists, amazing ship captains, polyglots, fishermen, documentarians, and a funny Irish lad, we are hoping to understand how they are organizing, collect interviews from divers/fishermen/NGOs involved in order to paint a more concise picture of what is happening with this pod and how to prevent more violence towards these endangered animals. I have been working alongside a documentary crew as a photographer and producer.
